Hike to Mont Juic Castle

This is not your typical ‘through the woods’ hike – but a truly worthwhile view (and much closer than other popular vistas like Parc Guell) of the city/ocean!

We took a street route from La Rambla across one of the principal streets of the city (Avenida Paral·lel) and up Mont Juic Mountain (which is actually a roadway, sooo.. if you didn’t WANT to walk because it is quite steep, you could actually take a bus or the funicular/teleferico/*cable car*).

Once you make it to the top of the mountain it’s fun to take a full loop around the outside.. if you are there on a weekend there’s a chance you will see a ‘biking school‘ in action! The city has essentially set up a mini “test track” that’s modeled after a few city blocks (different stop lights and all!) for young children to learn how to adhere to the biking/traffic laws of Barcelona to enhance bicyclist safety! The classes are taught by a handful of Barcelona Police Officers who advise 25+ new, little bikers at a time. Every once in a while they blow their whistles to stop everyone and inform them of a mock “change in traffic”to make them reroute, a rule that someone may have missed and the occasional general safety information.

If you’re a true adventurer, I’d recommend opting to head down a different trail than the one you came up in order to expose yourself to another part of the city! 🙂 (As you make your loop around the castle you will see many trail markers with their distances). The best way to learn more about where you live is to intentionally get lost once in a while – so I recommend spontaneously choosing a path and asking directions all the way home!
